In what has become one of the most anticipated dates in the pub groups calendar, Saturday 13th July saw 400 guests join the Almond family for their 10th One Small Step Pub Walk.

The Stockport pub company has four pubs in the area which are each visited along the scenic 10 mile walk. Starting at the Fletchers Arms in Denton, stopping off at the Spread Eagle, Puss in Boots and finishing the day with a celebration party at the Jolly Sailor in Davenport with a bouncy castle, raffle and much more.

As well as being a fun filled day the event’s main purpose is to raise money for the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research UK (FPWR UK), a charity close to the family’s hearts due to company director Vicki Williams’ daughter being diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) at just 2 weeks old. Bella, now 11, joined the droves for the second half of the walk and was delighted to be joined by six other friends from the PWS community.

Prader-Willi Syndrome is rare, with only 1 in 20,000 children being born with it in the UK every year, meaning events such as these are so important as they raise awareness of the syndrome, help build communities and of course raise money for research to help improve the lives of those living with it.

Vicki Williams said, “Over the 10 years we’ve been holding this event, it’s grown and grown. We had record numbers this year and we were pleased to see many new walkers as well as some who have joined us on every event.

“Our fundraising from Saturday currently stands at £14,500, which is just incredible! Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event what it is.”

The £14,000 raised this weekend brings total fundraising in Bella’s name for the charity to £167,000.

Every year, Marie Eaton (our Finance Manager) takes on a new challenge to raise well-needed funds and awareness for the Foundation of Prader-Willi Research UK (FPWR UK). The charity is one that is close to our hearts as it provides funds for research into Prader-Willi Syndrome, which our director, Vicki William’s daughter was diagnosed with at 2 weeks old.

This year was no different.

On the 27th April, Marie gathered over 30 team members and friends of Almond Family Pubs and triumphed over the Born Survivor’s mud-fuelled, assault course. This wasn’t just a regular mud-run, we’re talking about a gruelling (but oh-so-rewarding) 10k obstacle course designed by Royal Marine commandos, featuring mud, sweat, and probably a few tears.

So far, the team has raised an amazing £2,875, up and over their original goal!
This money is vital for the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research UK, so that they can continue with research projects that will eliminate the challenges that PWS presents.

Marie is a regular fundraiser for FPWR UK and we are so grateful for her commitment and fundraising… We wonder what she will do next year?

We are delighted to be organising our 10th annual charity walk for the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research UK this July. So far with our combined efforts we have raised a staggering £148,976 and we would love to continue to see this figure grow.  The research the FPWR UK finances is imperative to making the lives of those affected by Prader-Willi Syndrome more manageable.

Not only is this a wonderful day for our pubs and the local community but it’s a great chance to catch up with friends (whilst getting your steps in!) and to raise money for this important charity that is so close to our hearts.

This year’s event is on Saturday 13th July and will follow the same route as last year.

We will be starting slightly earlier this year so we can start celebrating a little earlier at the Jolly Sailor. Registration will open at 9.30am at the Fletchers Arms, ready to set off at 10.30am.

The day will include a pub pit stop at the Spread Eagle, lunch at the Puss in Boots, and finishing with a celebration party at the Jolly Sailor.

There will be a raffle, DJ, bouncy castle & more…

We really hope to see some familiar faces there again, as well as many new walkers. We would love you to invite friends and family and help us make the 10th event even more memorable!

Vicki and Zac made it to the finals and on the 18th June, attended British Institute of Innkeeping Summer event in London.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t their night, and they were pipped to the post by Justine at the Royal Dyche.
The team attending didn’t let it dampen their spirits though and we’re all very proud of how far they made it in the competition.
Vicki said, “This national award is the most prestigious there is in our industry, and we are proud to have been nominated! A combination of our passion for quality, combined with Zac and his teams hard work and natural aptitude to hospitality make this the best pub in Denton.  We were delighted that this has been recognised and we made it to the finals.”
Looking holistically at the leaders of the business, but also at the impact the pub has in its community and beyond, the award follows a rigorous application process including a mystery diner visit and two rounds of interviews.
Zac said, “While we didn’t win, this has certainly been a highpoint in my career so far, the award process has been a long one and hard work at times but so rewarding at the same time. I’ve always known the Fletchers is a special pub and to be in the top six of the entire country proves just that.”

Congratulations to Justine at the Royal Dyche and to all of the other finalists.

Vicki & Zac are in the Finals!

The Fletchers Arms in Denton has, for the last 21 years, been a top spot for drinkers and diners. Locals know and love it for the excellent food and drink it serves and always by the friendliest team in town. Now, Vicki Williams, Director (and licensee at the Fletchers) and Zac Williams-Wolfe, General Manager at this historical pub, have earned national recognition. From a pool of hundreds of applicants, they have been shortlisted to just 6 hopefuls in the prestigious Licensee of the Year Awards, run by the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII).

Zac said “To be recognised by the BII means such a lot, they are an integral body within the hospitality industry. This award really is as good as it gets for licensees”.

Sharing their news on their social media pages, the community was delighted to hear the good news. With comments including “You all deserve this it’s the best place in Denton, Congratulations for getting this far & the best of luck for the final”, and “It’s no surprise though really, you have a great pub with amazing food, lovely attentive staff. Well done for getting this far and fingers crossed you win x”

Vicki and Zac have already undergone a rigorous application process, including a professional mystery diner, where they received near full marks, and a two-hour interview with the head judges. They now face further panel interviews in London and will find out on the 18th June if they have been crowned Licensee of the Year 2024.

Vicki said “We received the news last week that we’d made it to the finals but had to keep it under wraps until the BII had announced their final 6. We’ve been dying to share our news. Now we have we’ve been overwhelmed by the lovely comments we’ve received from our guests. It’s a very proud moment for us.”

We Did It!
We’re through to the Semi Finals of the Licensee of the Year Awards.

(19th March 2024)

The Fletchers Arms are in the Quarter Finals.

We have some very exciting news to announce…

Our wonderful General Manager from the Fletchers Arms, Zac, alongside Vicki, our lovely director are quarter finalists in the BII’s Licence of the Year Awards.

This is a prestigious national award and to even be quarter finalists is a massive achievement, as it means we’re in the top 50 in the country!

We’ll keep you up to date with our progress, wish us luck 😊

As you have probably seen, the Fletchers Arms has been closed for the past eight weeks, and we have remained deliberately secretive about what to expect. Well, we can now reveal that we are once again open and the changes are… dramatic! We have rearranged the interior, relocating the bar to create a striking backdrop to the now more spacious bar lounge. Following a half a million pound investment with Robinsons, we hope you can see that the money has been well spent. The plush décor is in contrast to the wooden panelling, which creates a space that is ‘parliamentary’, yet cosy.
Vicki said, “We wanted to create more space for our drinkers and local community, we know we’re known for our carvery but we’re a traditional pub at heart and our bar guests are as important to us as our diners. We’re absolutely delighted with the refurbishment, it’s been a long project and certainly a lot of hard work but the final result is simply stunning.”
