Our kitchen teams visit Molyneux Kale Company
Every now and then it’s worth stepping away from the kitchen to see where it all begins. This week, members of our kitchen team did exactly that, swapping the pass for a pair of wellies and spending the day on the farm in Ormskirk with Molyneux Kale Company.
It’s a special place. The Molyneux family have been growing in this corner of south-west Lancashire for five generations, and today they’re the only growers in the UK producing kale all year round. The sea-tempered climate and rich local soil do a lot of the work, but so does decades of know-how passed down the family line.
After a site induction and a run-through of the kit, the team headed out into the fields with Chris Molyneux himself. We walked the rows of curly green kale, the deep purples and reds, and even spotted a vivid purple cauliflower nestled among the brassicas. Chris talked us through how the crops are grown, harvested and kept fresh, the first step some of our ingredients take on their way to your plate.
Knowing our product matters to us. The more we understand about where our ingredients come from and the care that goes into growing them, the better the dishes we can put in front of you, day in and day out.
A huge thank you to Chris and the team for such a warm welcome. We came away with muddy boots and a real appreciation for the work that happens long before anything reaches our kitchens.
